Spring?

After the Caldron Linn camp I caught the camping bug so bad I had to go back out for another the next weekend.

The camp started out somewhat windy but pleasant. There was still a good amount of snow in the high country but rapidly melting.
 Fun times with the family.
There's nothing like being in the mountains to make you feel alive.

 Enjoying life in the mountains
The second day we woke to snow!!! Just goes to show you never know what the weather is going to do in the spring.
We cooked and ate breakfast and then I got the family back home to be warm and dry.

First Camp of the Year

Well greetings friends. You have found the picture journal of a modern day mountaineer. The purpose of this journal is to inspire others who have an interest in history, particularly the era of the western fur trade, to get out on the ground and learn how to live like our amazingly tough ancestors.
Currently I am working my way through the requirements set by the American Mountain Men to become a member of this amazing group of folks who know how to live in the past.
Enjoy

The first camp I made this Spring was at Caldron Linn, a location that Wilson Price Hunt, in 1811, and his party decided they could not float the Snake River after losing two canoes and one man.

I started twelve miles down river from the location of our camp planning on packing in. This proved to be the worst trip I have endured so far. Now I didn't say that I didn't enjoy it, but it was miserable. Willows thicker than fur and rocks bigger than wagons don't make for pleasant walking.
When I made it to my first camp I knew that I was not going to make it to Caldron Linn by the next day so my plan was to find a trail out of the canyon and have my wife come pick me up and drive me the rest of the way.
The next morning I started early so I could find my way out of this miserable canyon. Let me tell you, there are not many ways to get out of this section of the Snake River canyon. The picture above is just one of the treacherous routes I had to take to get to the top and let me tell you I was glad to see the top.
Finally made it to camp at Caldron Linn
The wife said my clothes were smelling ripe so we went down to the river to do some laundry.

A good time with good folks. Thanks to everyone for making this camp great.
